Publishing: How to Tell a Hardware Problem From a Software Problem

Jonez note: This article has been written by the fine folks over at https://businessservicesweek.com if you are interested in various topics you should surely take a look at their site. I found this guest post article quite interesting, so I decided to post it. I found it so interesting, I might revisit this topic in the future with my personal advice.

A computer is made up of various different layers and components, all put in place to perform specifically for the computer’s needs. When a computer breaks or has malfunctioned, it can be a big pain and cause various different issues – especially if you use the computer for work.

save

When we are subject to a computer issue, it can be hard to determine where the problem is coming from. We have been groomed to just instantly turn it off and on again and pray for the best. But, it is more than likely a hardware or software problem. But, to anyone that isn’t very educated in computer makeup, it can be tough to know which is causing the problem.

The Difference Between Hardware and Software

Computer hardware can be defined as any physical attribute used in or with your machine. So, the hardware inside the computer, or the components on the outside such as your mouse, keyboard, server, and workstation. Hardware is anything that can be physically touched. Without these components to your computer, the software wouldn’t have anything to run on.

Software is a collection of code installed onto the computers’ hard drive, that allows the device to perform. Many systems will divide software into 3 different categories. These are system software, programming software, and application software. These major classes are sequenced in a way that will be able to change the state of the hardware of the computer.

Common Hardware Problems

Most common hardware issues are actually caused by your device overheating, and not being able to dispose of that heat to cool down. This can cause issues with all the components and their performance inside of the computer, disrupting workflow. Other than the underlying cause being heat, another way many hardware issues occur is because of physical damage. For example, dropping or smashing your device can cause the component to shift or even break themselves.

Some noticeable hardware problems can be as follows.

Blue Screen

A blue screen occurs when your computer encounters a failure called a ‘stop error’. The coding of this error causes the computer to completely crash and stop working. They can come onto your screen and produce all manners of information and coding that is being saved into your hard drive disk as it is happening. If this happens, the only way the laptop can be saved is to restart it entirely. This can lead to a lot of data loss, as the applications that may be open as the blue screen happens, do not have enough time to save all of their data.

Noisy Hard Drive

Hard drives, unknown to many, have a limited lifespan and these are something you do need to update every few months or years to have optimum performance. So, if there is clicking or disruptive grinding sounds coming from the inside of your computer, then it is highly likely the hard drive needs to be replaced.

Blank Screens

Having a blank monitor is one of the most common hardware problems. A blank screen is something that is most likely to occur at least once in your time when using a computer. This can be an annoyance if the computer is being used for work purposes or important work, so it’s an issue that would really need to be fixed fast. This problem can usually be caused by loose cables in the back of the computer such as the supply cord or video cable. A simple fix would be too check all of these and ensure they are securely plugged in, to decipher if these are the culprits.

Common Software Issues

Most common software issues are caused due to a bug in the coding sequence or because the system is not working as expected due to an external issue. Software problems can cause a lot of frustration as the software coding in your device is what runs your hardware to work smoothly.

Computer Freezing

A very common software issue in many devices is the incessant freezing of applications or the screen whilst it is in use. As the laptop will now not be able to be controlled by the mouse and no clicks are doing anything, the only option left is to restart the computer. But, instead of flicking the main supply to rid the laptop of complete power, just holding down the power button for 5-10 seconds will allow the device to restart without losing power – hopefully leaving any opened work untouched.

App Command Not Working

Another confusing and troublesome software problem that could occur is apps on the device are not loading or responding when opened. This can be caused by the software trying to load too many applications at once, and it just doesn’t have the power to configure them all. On the other hand, it could be the app compatibility with the strength of the software in your device. It may be possible that the device being used does not have the appropriate coding or sequence in its software to run the app.

Ways around these issues will be to either reboot your device and start on a clean screen with no additional applications running in the background – then start up the app you want to see if it loads. Or, it will be to research the chosen application and the environment it needs to work and compare that to your own device.

Your Computer Boots Extremely Slowly

Although a slow computer can be much of an annoyance, it is luckily one of the easiest problems to fix. The most common cause of the system taking its time to boot up is because there are too many applications trying to load at once in the background as your computer is trying to start too. The best way to avoid this issue would be to set all of the applications on the computer to only load when they are being used. This will stop new downloads sticking to their factory settings and loading as soon as the laptop starts – hopefully allowing your device to start a lot faster.

Conclusion

It is an annoyance for almost everyone when a device has problems or isn’t working properly – especially when it is of great importance to everyday life. It is hard to be able to configure by yourself why the problems are happening and find the cause. Therefore, the most beneficial decision would be to take your device to a repair shop, if the issue continues after reading through the tips and tricks of this article.

NekoJonez’s May 2017 Update

SpartaSleepingHello there, it’s time for another update blog. The summer season is almost here and I think it’s time to tell you my schedule for the summer of 2017. Also, there are a few things I want to update you guys and girls about what’s going on behind the scenes in my life and my blog. While I’m introducing this update blog, you can enjoy a picture of my lovely cat Sparta napping. She turned 9 years old last month, so yeah. In any case, it’s time to get the updates rolling!

My favorite gaming music #20 article progress

At the moment of writing this update article, I have to still write 20% of the article. After that, I’ll have to proofread the article, finish the layout and then put in all the tags and then do the final touches before I can publish it.

But, I can’t publish the article right away. I’ll tell you guys this, I first want to talk about a few games before I can publish the article. So, in the upcoming weeks, I’ll talk about those games. That’s all I’m going to spoil about that.

Writing this article is one of the biggest writing projects I have ever done for this blog. I can’t wait until it’s finished to show it to you. It’s going to be a very long article so, be prepared when you are going to read it.

If everything goes according to plan, I think I’ll be able to publish the article in either July or August. Remember, if you followed me on Twitter, you might have already known this.

Future content during the summer

While I try to plan everything out, sometimes I get a mail about an interesting game and I reschedule everything. But, I do have to say that I have the next 10 articles planned.

At this moment in time, my schedule has cleared up quite a bit. I finished my evening classes for this school year and the play ended last month. So, that means I have a bit more time for my personal life and this blog.

When I have the time, I might publish more than one post a week in this summer. But, because it’s summer time, I’m planning a few trips to meet up with friends and family so, it’s possible that I won’t publish articles in the weekend but during the workweek.  Pay attention, this will only be during the summer period. Because in September, my evening classes resume and not much later I’ll start to be in the rehearsals for the play in 2018.

I think it’s a great idea to follow me on Twitter since it’s so easy to publish quick updates. Also, feel afraid to tweet at me. I only bite in my food, so it’s all good.

Guest articles

Behind the scenes, I’m working with a few bloggers on a big project. I’m actually thinking about doing some collaborations with other bloggers. I won’t announce them in this article since they are still in the planning phases.

Speaking about guest articles, did you know I was a part of the Question of the Month articles in April and May? If you are interested in me answering the question of the month over at LaterLevels, well give it a look. I won’t spoil the question for June, but I have already submitted my reply for that!

Oh, if you are a blogger yourself and you want to do a collab with me, just send me a mail, tweet me or use my contact page. I’m open to collabs! I find them so much fun to do!

Misc updates

Here are some quick and smaller updates that I wanted to share.

Garage sale season is restarting. I can’t wait to go out on the hunt in the near future. I have a few ones already planned. Loot pictures will be on my Twitter when I find new games.

I have bought a 2nd 32GB SD card for my 3DS. Yeah, I was able to get a 32GB SD card full with games on my 3DS, I have since the 3DS released.

I was able to fix my gaming desktop finally. About time! It has been running excellent since Easter without any hiccups. So, the issue was that my 450W power brick was unable to get enough power to my hardware when it was under high load. I replaced the power brick with a 550W one, and it runs all the games I had problems with without any issue. I’m so glad I have my desktop back.

Also, if you follow me on Twitter, you might know that I tried to fix a computer I got from my grandfather in late April. It was a Packard Bell that I was unable to find drivers for anywhere on the internet. So, after replacing a faulty RAM stick and a new hard drive, I got the machine up and running again.

So, now I have two retro game PCs and a gaming desktop. My first retro PC is a Windows 98 SE machine with 512MB of RAM, 900MHz CPU, and 120GB HDD. The graphics are integrated on the motherboard. The new retro game PC is a Pentium 4 2,7 GHz CPU, 1GB RAM, 180 GB hard disk and the graphics are also integrated.

If you are wondering, my main gaming desktop is one that my uncle and I put together. It has a 3,7 GHz CPU, GeForce GTX 660, 120GB SSD, 2TB HDD and 16GB of RAM. It’s a powerful machine. While it doesn’t have the best graphics card on the market, I mainly use this computer for my evening classes. And in my evening classes, I have to use a lot of virtual machines and this computer is very good for that.

In any case, that’s everything I wanted to talk about in this update. Thank you for reading this article and I hope you enjoyed reading this article as much as I enjoyed writing it. I hope to be able to welcome you in another blog but until then, take care and have a great rest of your day!

NekoJonez Update Blog: May 2014

ImageIt’s time again for an article about my life! So, I promised to write an article like this each month. While a lot of this will be things that I mentioned on my Tumblr but hey, a reminder is nice once in a while. Besides, I consider things to be official when they are on my blog. Before I start, I have a few games that I picked up over the course of this month. Today I picked up 4 new PS2 games. I’m working on a list of my gaming collection. That might soon be published. Anyways, instead of heaving a long introduction, let’s get to the updates.

Life stuff

I’m sorry to inform you guys that I’m going through a struggle right now. I’m caught between a rock and a hard place. I said on my Twitter and Tumblr that I’ll be fine. June will be a month that will decide everything for the rest of my life! Yes, it’s finals time. But there is more to it then that.

Since it’s dangerous to post real life stuff online, I won’t talk in depth about it. For that, there is family and friends.

But I’m extremely busy. This brings a lot of stress and that means I don’t feel as motivated to write as I usually do. So, please keep that in mind.

HappyLatte

Soon, I’ll publish a new exclusive press release on my blog from the guys of HappyLatte. The press release will be posted  between the 19th – 25th. The usual article could be delayed. Depends on how the last week of May is going to look.

I need to do a small bit of work on it. Like adding my own personal thoughts on it. So, that’s way I can’t say a final date. But the good news is that each download that you guys make from my blog, you support me too. 🙂 That’s neat.

Read this article as well.

Since it would be silly to write about the same updates again on my blog.

Blog updates

First of all, as you guys can read… I think I inspired Q to a new series. From Manga to Video game. To be a bit of a “jerk”, I actually gave him that idea. But hey, he is getting really good at it. Since somebody wanted to really make the game he talked about in the article he published on my own blog.

I still need to add that article to the page for ButtonSmashers. I’ll do that soon.

On Tumblr, I kept you guys up-to-date with my life. I had a lot of work with the internships and now the finals are coming. And here is the sad part, I have an overload of ideas for my blog.

A new gaming nostalgia article is written and is ready to go. It will be published in May.

I’m also talking to my friends over at the ButtonSmashers Blog to review something else then a game. Oh yes, a special co-op review of something else.

Also, I’m planning a new game diary and a new Android games article. And a ton of first impressions. Maybe the ones I mentioned on my Tumblr and possibly others.

I’m also planning to revamp my pages. With more pictures and way more handy navigation. But that will be a project I will work on this summer. But suggestions, drop them in the comments.

Closing words

Wow, writing life updates on Tumblr makes my updates shorter and more to the point :). Sweet! Now, I have forgotten one thing and that is that I did a new update to my forum. Go take a look!

Anyways, if you want to keep more up-to-date with me and my current plans, I suggest that you follow me on Twitter. When I post something on Tumblr… it will show up there too. And on Tumblr I say my plans and ideas for my blog. But be warned, I’m sometimes somebody who quickly changes his mind.

Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoyed. I’ll see you guys on another post! Cheers!
